What Is Glycemic Index?

You have probably heard about the Glycemic index in foods and wondered how they can affect you. People who are concerned with the glycemic index are usually those who need to watch their weight or their diet due to conditions like diabetes.

The glycemic index is the number associated with certain carbohydrates with regards to how fast they break down in the system. Foods that are absorbed quickly into the system tend to turn into glucose quickly and are high in sugars. Those that take a longer time to break down in the system are considered low in the glycemic index and better for those on a diet or who have diabetes.

The low glycemic index in foods can be found in foods such as fatty fish, legumes and some vegetables. Pastas are also low in glycemic index as long as they are wheat pastas. Any foods that are lower than 50 in the glycemic index are considered to be good for those on a glycemic index diet. Those foods that are high in the glycemic index, such as those high in sugars, white bread, potatoes and bananas, are considered to be a poor choice for those who are on a low glycemic index diet.

Rice and some fruits are medium foods in the glycemic index. There are some rices that are higher in the glycemic index than others Some fruits, such as watermelon and orange, are high in the glycemic index, while others are lower.

Critics of the glycemic index and the diet state that the foods that are objected to in a low glycemic index diet are good for people who are not watching their sugars and should not be avoided. It is also important to note that there is no distinction in the glycemic index for how the foods are cooked, which can make a huge difference in the diet. Most of those who criticize the glycemic index do so because of the way that it is used with regard to weight loss rather than how it is used when it comes to the control of diabetes.

It is important to understand about the glycemic index if you have been ordered to go on a low glycemic index diet. A GI diet is one where you eat foods that are low in the glycemic index such as vegetables, legumes and fish, to name a few. If you have been diagnosed with borderline diabetes, for example, you will want to watch the glycemic index in the foods. You can usually find the number associated with the glycemic index on the food labels. If you are on a low glycemic foods diet, you need to look for a glycemic index that is in the 50s or lower on the food labels.
